3 Easy Ways to Stay Hydrated

Throughout the day, it's easy to forget to drink enough water. You get busy or distracted, and drinking water gets forgotten. Plenty of people struggle to know how to drink enough water each day.

Rehydration is one of the best things we can do for our health. Not getting enough water and the electrolytes we need can impair all kinds of performance, not just physical activity. Preventing fluid loss and rehydrating helps you perform your best and helps keep you healthy, both physical health and mental health-wise.

If you find it hard to drink enough water each day, try these three tips.

1. Rehydrate now, not when you're thirsty.

Feeling thirsty is actually an alarm signal from the body, telling us that we're already dehydrated. Mild dehydration isn't life-threatening, but it can make you experience lightheadedness and lethargy. To avoid those negative symptoms and prevent dehydration, have a glass of water regularly before you even feel thirsty.

Try to create healthy habits, like having a glass of water every two hours or with every meal or cup of coffee. Caffeine-filled drinks can hydrate you temporarily, but they can leave your body dehydrated as your body digests the caffeine, and can lead to increased blood pressure. Make sure you balance your coffee with a glass or a bottle of water.

2. Always have water with you

The best way to keep up your water intake is to have your water bottle with you all the time. If you don't have a water bottle, a two or three litre jug and a glass at your desk will help you keep track of how much water you've had, making it easy to know if you've had enough fluids.

If you have bottled water, bring your water bottle with you wherever you go. A refillable bottle means you can keep thirst at bay for free. Plus, you can enjoy the added health benefits of water over other beverages that might be available, like soft drinks and other diuretics.

It takes 21 days to form a new habit, so start by setting yourself short-term goals of drinking enough water, and soon you'll be able to achieve your long-term goals of hydration.

3. Think beyond tap water when it comes to hydration

Plain, pure tasting water is the best way to get fluid into your body, since the body doesn't have to digest anything else as you sip. However, pure water isn't the only way you can stay hydrated, there are some simple ways you can enjoy hydration as well as other drinks for variation.

Herbal teas and tisanes (those are fruity infusions with no caffeine) can help you get enough fluid into your body. Even water-rich foods like cantaloupe, watermelon, and other fresh fruits contain necessary fluids as well as healthy minerals that your body craves.

You can vary the water itself too—sparkling water or cold water from a water dispenser will help you meet your daily water intake goals. Defeating negative symptoms like dry mouth or muscle cramps can be fun and easy.
