World Coffee Day History

In 2014, the International Coffee Organisation came together to launch the first International Coffee Day. While several countries had their own national coffee celebrations, this would be the first instance of the world celebrating together.

How to celebrate World Coffee Day

What better way is there to celebrate International Coffee Day than by enjoying a delicious cup of coffee? Hot or cold, black or white, coffee is a regular part of life for a lot of us, so World Coffee Day gives us the chance to be mindful of our favourite cup o’ joe. Take a seat and enjoy the first whiff of coffee as the steam floats up from your mug. Savour the first sip as the coffee itself hits your taste buds.

Choosing your favourite coffee

Deciding what kind of coffee to drink might be simple. You might know you love a single shot of espresso. Or maybe you have a sweet tooth and love the chocolate addition in a mocha. But for others, there are a lot of details about coffee that can make the drink confusing.

First, there’s how much the beans are roasted. You’ll find coffee beans range from light roast to dark roast, with lighter roasts having more delicate flavour profiles and darker roasting styles often tasting slightly more bitter.

Then, you want to decide if you want a hot coffee or an iced coffee. And of course, the sweetness level. Do you add more sugar? Maybe a hazelnut or vanilla syrup. But all of that comes after choosing the type of coffee you want to enjoy.

Types of coffee explained

Espresso

Espresso

Also called a short black, an espresso is a single shot of coffee. Very strong in flavour

Americano

Americano

A shot of espresso with additional hot water added for a longer-lasting drink without added caffeine.

Long black coffee

Long Black

A double shot of espresso poured over hot water. This process retains more of the crema of the coffee and results in a stronger flavour than an Americano.

Cappuccino

Cappuccino

One espresso shot, textured milk, and foam on top with a chocolate dusting to finish.

Latte

Latte

One espresso shot, topped up with steamed milk, and a layer of foam on top.

Flat white coffee

Flat White

Invented in Australia, a flat white is one espresso shot, topped up with foamed milk with little to no foam or froth on top.

Mocha

Mocha

Similar to a latte, with chocolate added to the espresso shot before adding in the milk.

Affogato

Affogato

A double shot of espresso poured over a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Cold brew coffee

Cold Brew

Made by steeping coffee grounds in cool-temperature water for an extended period of time (12-24 hours).

Decaf coffee

Decaf

Decaf coffee refers to any brew made with a decaffeinated base. The decaf process removes roughly 97% of the caffeine from coffee beans.

Making coffee even better

We wouldn’t be celebrating World Coffee Day if we didn’t love coffee, but what if we could make it taste even better?

The truth of the matter is that even if you have the best coffee beans or grounds in the world, 98% of your coffee is made up of water. If your water tastes off, the taste of your coffee will be affected.

Water can carry impurities that aren’t harmful, but can impact taste, smell, and mouthfeel. Elements like chlorine, lead, copper, and limescale as well as impurities like pesticides are sometimes picked up as water flows through pipes and water systems. Filtering out those elements with BRITA Water Filters reduce impurities which leads to better-tasting water and, therefore, better-tasting coffee. Reducing limescale also assists to protect expensive machinery from build up which can cause break downs. Check out more about this here.

Whether you're a barista looking to improve your coffee-making or you want to enjoy cafe-quality coffee at home, making sure you've got great-tasting filtered water is an ideal first step towards great-tasting coffee.
