How Thirsty is Your Mind?
Think drinking water is just about quenching thirst? Think again. Hydration is the secret fuel behind your brainpower, energy, and even your mood. Experiencing dehydration can leave you feeling foggy, cranky, and unproductive which is not ideal when you lead a busy lifestyle!

Did you know 80% of your brain is water?
Even a 1-2% drop in body water can impair cognitive function, increase fatigue, and reduce your ability to regulate emotions. Dehydration can even heighten feelings of anxiety or irritability, making it harder to stay grounded in the moment.
Forget the one-size-fits-all ‘8 glasses a day’ rule. Everyone’s hydration needs are unique, and tuning into your body’s signals can enhance clarity, focus, and emotional balance. By drinking mindfully, you can transform a simple sip of water into a moment of self-care and presence, nourishing your body and mind.
Take our Hydration Quotient Quiz to discover your hydration personality and find out whether you’re a hydration hero… or if it’s time to level up your sipping game to support a sharper, calmer, more centred you.
BRITA is here to help Aussies feel truly alive, demonstrating how filtered water can boost brain function, support mindfulness, and turn daily routines into small but powerful rituals of well-being.

Hydration Habits
Research shows two-thirds of Australians (67%) know the recommended daily water intake, yet only a third (35%) meet it. The average Aussie drinks just 1.4 litres a day, far below what’s recommended This isn’t about knowledge, it’s about behaviour. Four in five Australians (79%) say they don’t drink enough water, mainly because they forget (41%) or are too busy (29%).

Dr Gina Cleo, habits expert, explains:
“This is a classic case of the knowing–doing gap. Australians understand hydration is important. To close that gap, we need simple, repeatable habits that make hydration consistent. Our brains thrive on routine, so linking drinking water to existing routines makes it feel simple and natural.”
“Lasting change isn’t about willpower, it’s about the small, repeatable choices we make each day. By focusing on practical, easy-to-implement habits, like drinking more water, taking mindful pauses, or setting up your environment for success, we can improve our health in ways that feel natural, sustainable and achievable.”

As a busy podcast host and digital creator, Lucy Neville, BRITA Hydration Quotient Ambassador, knows this struggle well:
“I was honestly a little nervous to do the quiz because I knew exactly what my results would be. Spoiler, I'm not an Aqua Ace. Unless it's right in front of my face, I completely forget to drink water, and then I get to the end of the day and wonder why I feel flat and in a terrible mood. I've started paying more attention to hydration and I hate to report that the experts are correct; I feel so much better when I'm consistently hydrated. I keep my filtered water jug topped up throughout the day, and I'm working on it becoming a daily habit. Which also means that I'm avoiding my typical 5pm scull of way too much water at once when I realise I haven't had any yet. Look, am I proud of having to work on my hydration at this big age? No. But I'm comforted by learning that I'm certainly not alone.”

The Impact of Dehydration
More than 80% of Australians (82%) say poor hydration negatively affects their performance, from concentration (51%) and daily functioning (47%) to stress management (34%), problem-solving (29%), and creativity (29%).
As life gets busy, staying hydrated is a simple way to boost focus, manage stress, and support daily performance. Like mindfulness, hydration is a small, intentional act with ripple effects on both mind and body. By making hydration a mindful habit, Australians can transform a daily necessity into a powerful ritual for clarity, calm, and productivity.
